PROJECT TITLE  MEDEA Awards

Aim of the MEDEA Awards

In recent years there has been remarkable interest in the creation and use of digital video and audio in education, boosted by the increasing impact of multimedia and video based web sites and applications on the Internet and mobile devices. The pedagogical vision is clear: it is only when video and audio are routine components of education and online learning, that we will have an educational environment that reflects the media-rich world in which our learners now live. The aim of the MEDEA Awards is to encourage innovation and good practice in the use of media (audio, video, graphics and animation) in education. The Awards also recognise and promote excellence in the production and pedagogical design of media-rich learning resources.

History of the MEDEA Awards

The MEDEA Awards were launched in November 2007. In its first year MEDEA received over 100 submissions from 25 different countries, the judges selected 5 winners and an additional Special Award winner who all received prizes of computer hard and software at the MEDEA Awards Ceremony in December 2008. The winners included the overall MEDEA Award 2008 winner "Rättegångsskolan på webben/Court introduction" produced by Brottsoffermyndigheten/Crime Victim Compensation and Support Authority (Sweden). The other winners were "ArtisanCam" by Artistsatwork.org (UK), "Canal Educatif" (France), "Patient Safety - Mildred’s Story" by University of Leicester (UK) and "Pronunciation Tips" by BBC Learning English (UK).

A MEDEA Special Award 2008 was awarded to Sint-Lievenscollege Gent (Belgium) for the project "Anti-Anti" created by a group of 5 secondary school students as part of an anti-violence initiative in their school.

New Award Opportunities

The MEDEA Awards have expanded this year with two new awards, the MEDEA Award for Creativity and Innovation and the European Collaboration Award. The MEDEA Award for Creativity and Innovation, set up to coincide with the European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009 will specifically award creative and innovative use of media by educators and learners. The European Collaboration Award in educational media production and use will recognise excellent productions and projects that come about as a result of European cross-border collaboration.

Participate!

Everyone who produces video, audio and/or multimedia based learning and teaching materials is welcome to enter the MEDEA Awards. Find out how you can participate in this year’s competition. The main criteria for entry is that the multimedia project, production or service submitted must make use of images and/or sound to support teaching and learning. Entries by teachers and learners are particularly welcome.

How to Participate

Steps
  1. Before submitting a multimedia project or production, we strongly recommended that you read the Judging Criteria to understand what the judges are specifically looking for and the criteria they will use when judging your submission, as well as the Terms & Conditions of submission, where you will find the rules for participation in the MEDEA Awards. Read also the important Copyright information page.

  2. Register for the competition by creating an account. After activation of your account (which will be done via e-mail), you will find in the "How to participate" submenu a "Submit entry" button. Clicking on that button allows you to immediately start submitting your entry.

  3. Fill in the online form by answering all questions in as detailed and comprehensive a manner as possible. Providing good information will help the jury understand the value of your entry and will increase your chances of winning.  The submission form can be completed in English, French or German (French and German versions of this web site will be available soon.) You can save your submission form for later and it will then appear under the My entries tab at the top of each page. You can then come back to your submission later and continue filling in the form before you finally submit it.

  4. Finalise your submission by checking the "finalise" option before saving. Note: after checking the "finalise" option, you will no longer be able to change the submission of that item. You can of course continue with the submission of other items.

  5. Print the finalised form, sign it and send it before 30th September 2009, 12 PM (midnight) together with 3 copies of any relevant offline media (if your entry is available on, for example a CD-rom or a DVD...) to the MEDEA Secretariat (MEDEA Secretariat, Leuvensesteenweg 132, B-3370 Boutersem, Belgium).

  6. After finalising your submissions, you can monitor their status in My entries in the "status" column. There you can check if the MEDEA Secretariat has received your submission and if there are any problems with the submission process. When the entry has been accepted by the MEDEA Secretariat, the status will change to "approved" to formally indicate that the submission is accepted as an entry for the MEDEA Awards 2009.

  7. The MEDEA Secretariat will of course also keep contact with you through email. If you have any questions about this process, please use this contact form.
Judging Criteria

The MEDEA Awards judges recognise the primary role of effective and innovative educational design in the use of moving images with learners. The judges will be looking in the first place for materials and approaches that demonstrate original and successful use of media with learners to achieve clearly defined educational outcomes. The quality of the materials themselves is important as the judges will consider the following criteria, appropriate to the learning context:
  1. Pedagogical Quality: quality of didactics and of communication. Is there a clear learning objective? Will the material result into good learning?

  2. Use of Media: the choice and selection of this media type, the benefits and if these benefits are explicit, if the type of media chosen is used appropriately and in an exemplary fashion?

  3. Aesthetic Quality: attractiveness of materials. Is the style and design consistent and appropriate for the target users? Is the product or service appealing and pleasing to look at and to use?

  4. Usability: the intuitiveness of the material. Is it easy to use the application? Is there support, a set of guidelines, a possibility for feedback or help?

  5. Technical Quality: possible flaws in the system, compatibility issues, the necessity to have advanced technical knowledge to be able to use the system.
The MEDEA Awards judges are particularly keen to encourage original and groundbreaking applications of moving images and sound in education. In addition to the main award, the judges may at their discretion present a special award to an approach or production in recognition of exceptional innovation in pedagogic or technical design.
  • All multimedia projects or programmes that are intended for use in formal or informal education can be submitted.

  • The multimedia materials may range from simple video or multimedia productions, including learner and teacher created media, to courses with a prominent integration of media, to examples of multimedia resources or projects with a strong media basis, in short all media materials that support formal or informal learning activities.

  • There is no restriction regarding the target group(s) of the educational media: learners, teachers, trainees at all ages and educational levels and subject matters.

  • There is no restriction regarding the language(s) of the educational media. The submission forms are available in English, French and German only and need to be completed in one of those languages but this is not a restriction for the language of the media or project itself.

  • The multimedia project or production must be created after 1 January 2007. Of course, the production or project may include or consist of older material.

  • There is no restriction on the geographical origin or location of use of the submitted materials: media materials from all over the world can be submitted for all awards except for the special European Collaboration Award.

  • The special European Collaboration Award will be awarded to a project or production that involves partners from at least two European Countries in the production or use of the educational media.

  • Media materials that are physically submitted on for example CD-rom/DVD and accompanying print manuels, will not be returned to the sender after the competition.

  • It is the responsibility of the person submitting the entry to make sure that all copyright (IPR, intellectual property right) is cleared for the project he/she is submitting. In case of clear breaches of copyright or other IPR, the judges will exclude the submission from further assessment. It is recommended at the time of the submission that the person submitting provide adequate documentation or evidence on how IPR or copyright has been dealt with.

  • Participants are allowed to submit up to 12 entries.

  • Participants can only win one of the four possible awards: the MEDEA Award, the MEDEA Special Award, the European Collaboration Award, or the MEDEA Award for Creativity and Innovation. The jury and organising committee may at all times decide not to award the MEDEA Special Award. This special award will only be awarded upon the jury’s own initiative to an approach or production in recognition of exceptional innovation in pedagogic or technical design.

  • Multimedia productions or projects that were submitted for the 2008 MEDEA Awards competition, can be resubmitted if all conditions above are met and if the submission is accompanied by a motivation and a clear indication of the changes since last year’s submission.

  • All the required materials (signed letter with original signature and 3 copies of a cd-rom/dvd if necessary) have to be sent to the MEDEA Secretariat before Wednesday 30th September, 12 PM (midnight) (postmark will be checked).
