Prohibition of any corporal punishment on the students was another first for its time. Most importantly, the school curricula consisted of Western-style courses with an aim of creating a modern, cultured youth that would shape the future of the country.
In the 21st Century, the tenets of the school remain the same; however the methods are being constantly updated according to contemporary developments.
In the turbulent year of 1912, Terakki School had to leave Salonica. The Balkans had become a war zone and the Turkish community of the city had to emigrate from their homes to the eastern regions of the empire. This particular phase of the school’s history in Salonica came to an end. However, the spirit and the educational concepts of Terakki were to continue in a new school to be established in Istanbul.
From its foundation to the present day, the target of the Terakki Vakfi (Terakki Foundation) Schools has been continual development and enhancement of the educational quality it offers to its students
After the school moved from Salonica to Istanbul, it served in a number of rented buildings until it moved into its own facilities which were completed in 1942 in the district of Nisantasi. After operating in that building for long years, the school moved again to its modern campus in Levent, one of the most beautiful and green neighborhoods of Istanbul, not far from Nisantasi.
Since the academic year of 1994-1995 the Terakki Vakfi Schools, namely the Nursery School, Primary School and the High School operate from a well-organized complex of buildings offering a wide range of facilities including a covered semi-Olympic swimming pool, library, computer suites, sports grounds, etc. |
